As urban sketching is about documenting what’s happening around us here now, I think I should record what our life is like under the coronavirus outbreak and all the confusions along with it – it’s time to get out to see the world. I’m trying to be as honest and sincere to what I see as I can.

My simple sketch kit. I started using a MD notebook (I copied a friend sketcher) for casual daily drawing/journaling a couple of weeks ago. Together with it, I bring a few pens with me – ZIG markers, Fudegokochi pen (pen with a tip creating a brush-like effect), fineliner, etc. The size of the book is A5, so there’s enough space on a spread to combine some drawings, a text, and a sticker/shop card/museum ticket if I have.

The other day I sketched people on the train (first pic). 90% of them wore a mask. In 10%, to my surprise, I found quite a few elder people who look 70+ years old. I know we all are worried and want to protect ourselves. Also, now it’s kind of socially required to wear a mask in public space. Yet there’s not a sufficient supply of masks. Then we need to set priorities. Who needs a mask most?

A few days later, I went to a hospital. I waited for long to just have a 5-min meeting with my doctor (as usual), so I killed time drawing people (as usual) (second pic). There I came up with a weird idea. It’s One Week 100 People – without a mask. As the name suggests, One Week 100 People is a challenge of drawing 100 people in a week (technically in five days). This year it starts on the 9th of March. I got a strange urge to try a “without a mask” version and prove how impossible it is because almost everyone wears a mask.

These drawings are not special at all, but just a record of daily life. However, because it was almost the same time when I started the notebook as the virus outbreak got considered serious here in Japan, the book unintentionally documents our life under the influence of the virus stuff. I hope, in a few months or in a year, I’ll flip through the book and remember the days without fear. Now I’ll just keep observing and trying to draw what I see honestly, which will become the most reliable record.
